The term on page optimisation refers to any work carried out directly on your website. The diagram on the left and the descriptions below explain which elements need attention when optimising your website for search engines.

The on page optimisation is any work carried out directly on your website. This could include anything from text content, keyword density, link structure, url names etc a full list of elements we consider can be found below.

As well as ensuring the site is well optimised we also make sure that the design of the site and the messaging is geared towards converting your users to clients/customers. Our experience in marketing, graphic design and branding allows us an advantage over most other SEO companies. By using these skills we can ensure that the traffic that we generate will have a high conversion rate.

Page Titles

The page title appears in the google search results and at the top of the the browser window. All page titles need to be different and should include keywords where possible but still should remain descriptive and engaging. Google cuts off its display of titles at 64 characters. Yahoo and MSN display more characters but we recommend keeping it under 64 characters.

Page Descriptions

The description is what is seen under the page title when the site is found on the search engine results page. Page descriptions will be written to be unique on every page and to include selected keywords.

URL Naming

URL's will be will be written to include selected keywords and all links to that page will be changed accordingly.

Meta Tags

We will include relevent keywords within the meta tag element of each page. Although Google no longer uses this tag due to too many people abusing it by stuffing keywords into it, other search engines do still take it into consideration.

H1 (Heading) Tags

The H1 tag is the main heading tag in HTML code, this is given a high relevance by search engines and needs to be high up within the code and needs to contain keywords. See this short video explanation from Matt Cutts on H1 usage.

ALT Image Attribute

Images are allowed alternative text tags, these will be written to include the keywords for the page the image is present on. See this short video explanation of the advantages of using alt image attributes.

Link Titles

All links are allowed a title which is seen when you hover over the link, these will be written to include keywords.

Keyword Density

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. Your text should have a certain level of keyword density without it sounding unusual. You should write your text for human consumption and not for search engine spiders. The key to getting the right keyword density is to write about the keywords you are targeting therefore they should naturally appear quite frequently. We like to use synonyms and related keywords instead of having a high keyword density. This helps to make the content sound natural but still helps in SEO.

Bold [strong]

By using the [strong] tag you can emphasize the word to the user and the search engine.

Internal Link Structure

It is important to have a clear navigation structure for ease of use and to ensure the search engine robots reach all your internal pages. Keywords within anchor text also helps eg "Interest Free Credit Card Application" is a better anchor text compared to "click here".

Site Speed

Site speed reflects how quickly a website responds to web requests. Google now takes this into account when they are reviewing your website therefore we will try and improve site speed where possible. Some useful tools on how to improve and measure speed.

W3C Validation

The Markup Validation Service is a validator by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that allows Internet users to check HTML documents for conformance to HTML or XHTML standards. It also provides a quick method for web page authors to check their posted pages for mark-up errors.

Robots.txt

We use robots.txt to provide instructions directly to web robots. Robots are programs that traverse the web automatically, search engines such as Google use them to index your web content. We often instruct robots not to crawl certain pages, this can be useful for shopping baskets, secure content, temp files etc. We can disallow robots altogether which will mean your site will not be indexed in any search engines.
